Introduction

The aim of this course is to provide students with an introduction to ancient Greek philosophy through Aristotle’s unparalleled analysis of his predecessors. Furthermore, the course aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of Aristotle's philosophical principles, elucidating the evolution of his fundamental concepts and terminology through a critical engagement with the philosophical tradition of his era. In this regard, some of our guiding questions are the following:

  • How can one define philosophy?

  • How is a philosopher different from a craftsman or a politician?

  • How was philosophy born and what were the problems the first Greek philosophers tried to solve?

  • What were the primary achievements but also the main shortcomings of the first Greek philosophers up until the time of Aristotle?

  • Why does Aristotle consider a dialogue with his predecessors a necessary step towards searching for philosophical truth?
